One Day Closer to Friday!

THANKFUL THURSDAY - and I think everyone! knows what I am thankful for today:) So much so, I don't think I'll even blog about it least, not this week!

A few other things to be thankful for today -

*thunderstorms - and the cool fronts that come with them bringing a little break in the summer's humidity
*the song of whippoorwills early in the morning - these always stir up memories of my grandparents' house and great visits there when I was a little girl
*all the America flags still proudly displayed throughout the neighborhood
*an unexpected phone call yesterday from a friend I haven't seen in too long
*Riley's great report from her two-year check yesterday - and no more shots for a year!
*God's faithfulness....even when my faith is so small.

Looking forward to Mary Poppins tonight - what fun! Hope your Thursday is full of moments to be thankful for and good things to anticipate!!

Happy Wednesday

Just some random thoughts for the middle of my week......

Simply counting the days until my boy comes home - goodness, this is a picture "from the archives" much he has changed (well, the hair and missing facial hair (woo hoo) )but at the same time how much he looks the same. Can't wait to take some updated pictures....he will probably be so tired of my camera:)
So his only requests for his visit....

1- spaghetti and tacos
2- to visit the cemetery
3- some "man time" just with his dad
4 - the Cheesecake Factory
Totally think we can do it!!

I can't remember the last time Jordan saw this little cutie - so wish we could have arranged a way for everyone to be together.............
I sure do miss her myself!! Wonder what she is up to these days:) And do I just love how she is rockin' that whale spout in this picture!! HA:) She doesn't usually wear her hair like that anymore - probably just came from the pool - but it so reminds me of when she was a baby - and she looks pretty cute, if I do say so myself!!
And just for fun - a cute joke just for a laugh today.....
A pastor was out visiting members one day when he came upon a house where someone was obviously home but no one came to the door even after repeated knocks. The pastor took out one of his business cards and wrote Revelation 3:20 on the back and stuck it in the door.
On Sunday, after the offering had been processed, he found the card had been returned and a message was included - it read Genesis 3:10. Grabbing his Bible, the preacher turned to the verse and broke into gales of laughter.
Revelation 3:20 begins...."Behold, I stand at the door and knock."
Genesis 3:10 states...."I heard thy voice in the garden and I was afraid because I was naked."
Hope you smiled:)

A Bit of a One Tracked Mind This Week

My Simple Woman's Daybook: July 26, 2010

Outside my is sunny and the start of another summer day - but not as oppressive as the weekend. This past weekend we had temps in the low 100s and plenty of humidity - definitely those "dog days" of summer. We had a doozy of a storm blow through yesterday evening and the air is much more pleasant this morning - even enjoyed our morning drinks on the patio again!

I am thinking...about everyone's comments and thoughts regarding the beach and the mountains this past Friday for our time with friends. I am really enjoying these Friday posts. There were two posts linked in and several preferences noted in the comments. Just for fun...I took the names of all those who joined "Friday with Friends," threw them in a hat and had Hubbie draw a name...and Debbie is a winner this morning! Just a wee little something - just for a friend:) Can you email me your new address??

I am wearing....a new size these days - WOO HOO and high fives!!

I am remembering...yesterday's Sunday school lesson. We had a lesson from one our summer interns - a young man still in college (read that young!) and it was a fantastic lesson. So exciting to see the potential in these young people who are dedicated and eager to serve the Lord and follow the path He has set for their lives. No doubt, God has great plans for Jared. What a blessing yesterday!

I am try and find new shoes to wear with my dress this Thursday. This Thursday evening is ladies' night with several friends - dinner and a play. We are going to see Mary Poppins at the Kennedy Center downtown. How cool! I can't wait. We decided to go a bit dressy...just for fun...and I have a cute dress (that fits me so much better now) but I need cute shoes:) So looking foward to this night:)

I am, not much. (Well, I am doing my devotions but you know all that extra reading that you are supposed to have time for during the summer - not so much.)

I am hoping.....I can contain myself for next five days - until Jordan comes home!! Finally was able to talk to him last night - yeah! And we are all counting the minutes until noon on Friday:)

On my mind...sweet Tyler. This week also includes his "Heaven birthday" as another grieving friend says - four years since my baby...and a huge part of my heart...has been in Heaven. All that he is doing, I can only imagine - but I'm sure he is doing it "big" and what that reunion will be like - when Tyler can introduce me to Jesus himself - truly, I can only imagine!

From the yummy new recipe and one semi-flop this past week. The new mac and cheese was only ok (I like my old recipe better). I had to substitute one cheese and maybe that made the difference. What is guyere cheese anyhoo?? I certainly could not find it.

Around the house...did I mention that Jordan is coming?? :) He has never been in our new home - I hope it says "HOME" to him! And I hope it doesn't say "dusty" to him. Ugh, on dust!

Plans for the week....well, I think I mentioned that. My girlfriend that moved to Pennsylvania earlier this year is coming down for Thursday evening - can't wait to see her again. I suppose I should dust before she comes - and then I'll have that done for Jordan, as well! Am I clever? And then at the airport on Friday - but I guess I already mentioned that a time or two!

One of my favorite things....

Organized, stuff!!

It was Hard to Decide

Friends joining: Giggles, Joyfull, and several more through comments (check them out)

Welcome to Friday with Friends! Are you a beach person or a mountain person?? I have to admit I thought quite a bit about this one myself:) I once posted about finally admitting I am a city "romantic" as it might seem to be a fresh-faced, country girl - I just am not. I thought somewhat the same about loving the mountains - the green open spaces, gorgeous changing leaves and fresh air...all of which are wonderful. But, if I'm honest with myself...I love the water. OK - let me clarify one thing...I do NOT swim in the ocean (gross!) but I do love the water....and being at the beach!!

I love the sound of the waves. I love the seagulls and the sandpipers. I love the sun on the horizon - and especially watching it fade out of view. I love the sand on my feet.

I also love the memories that the beach brings to mind - not only memories with my family when I was younger but wonderful times at the beach with my own little ones! My dad used to rent a huge house at the beach when our children were small and we would all spend a week together at the beach.

Here is fair-haired Tyler enjoying the beach from my favorite spot......under the umbrella. I know its goofy - I love the beach but not the sun! True. Give me a huge beach umbrella and a huge cooler for cold drinks (make mine tea) and I'm fine with the beach. But really it is simply being by the water that I love!

This picture is also from the beach - down by the marina...which makes me feel every bit as relaxed, happy and peaceful as the ocean does. This is Hilton Head - definitely one of my favorite places to be! Hubbie and I love to dream - its fun! - and our dreams always include a spot at Hilton Head....

oh, and maybe one of these!!!!

If you are joining us today - be sure to let me know and I will link you in!! Have a wonderful Friday, friends!!

Thankful Today....

Please don't forget about tomorrow's Friday with Friends....are you a "beach person" or a "mountain person" - why? what do you love? I know it is hard to pick one over the other (or for some of us, it is) but generally one really speaks to our soul more than the other. Not to mention, its just a blog post for grading or criticiqing - just sharing with friends!:) I hope you will join in tomorrow. Be sure to let me know if you do.

Thankful Thursday -
*the new shelves in the basement to help corral and organize "our stuff" will be totally complete tonight. We ran into a couple handsaw issues earlier this week and then church last night, so it will be done this evening. Nothing like a finished project - ok, REALLY nothing better than organized stuff!

*I found the deal of the decade on Craigslist yesterday - new curtains from Country Curtains. I have the catalog for this store and had even earmarked these particular curtains as ones I really liked - the exact ones were for sale not far from my home. The valances sell for $69 a piece in the catalog and I bought FOUR for fifty dollars!! Woo Hoo. And she gave me four matching pillow (which I have no idea what I will do with) that sell for $29 each - which she just included with the valances:) I'm tellin' ya - I really have to control myself with this Craigslist!:)

*spent the day with a girlfriend on Monday...and had such a great day. We did some househunting - fun - and then drove out to the country about 45 minutes from my house to visit an antique mall I stumbled across a few months back. And, yes, it was closed on Mondays. But we had a great time...chatting and laughing - and visiting the Amish bakery/country store next door to the (closed) antique shop.

*enjoyed good fellowship with several ladies from my women's group earlier this week. With so many on vacation, I was not sure anyone would show - but nine of us met and had a nice evening together. I am very blessed to be a part of this ministry at our church and to work with such a sweet group of ladies.

*so thankful for air conditioning. Like so many things, I often take this for granted. Many do not have central air - oh my. I am so grateful for this comfortable home. It is supposed to 100plus again this weekend. And humid.

*only 8 more days until Jordan comes home!! Really?? As in one week!! It has over a year since I have seen that boy - and I am beyond excited to think I will see him next week! I love that well as, his sisters:), my sweet Hubbie (how does he put up with me?), and of course Miss Riley - she just makes me smile!

Blueberry Raspberry Crisp

So wanting to do something "ordinary" for Hubbie yesterday - just to say I love you - I made a blueberry-raspberry crisp that I recently saw in Family Circle magazine....which was quite yummy, or so I have determined since the dish is more than half empty. I know it sure did smell delicious while it was baking. I love using all the fresh fruits from the farmer's markets this time of year.

Here is the recipe - in case you want to show someone a little love today:)

Blueberry-Raspberry Crisp

Berry Mixture
4 cups blueberries
1/2 cup light brown sugar
1/4 cup all purpose flour
juice and zest from one large orange
2 cups raspberries

3/4 cup all purpose flour
2/3 cup light brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 stick cold butter, cut into small pieces
1/2 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup chopped pecans

1 - Heat oven to 350
2 - Berry Mixture: In large bowl, mix together blueberries, 1/2 cup light brown sugar, flour, orange juice and zest. Place into 6-8 cup baking dish. Evenly scatter raspberries over the top.
3 - Topping: In another large bowl, whisk together flour, brown sugar and cinnamon. Cut in butter until crumbly. Stir in oats and pecans.
4 - Sprinkle topping evenly over berry filling. Bake at 350 for 55 minutes, until bubbly. Cool 15 minutes before serving.

I Got It

So, I was reading a post this morning (find it here) about loving our husbands in the "ordinary" things - those every day things that we do but that can be done with a true servant's heart..and lots of really express our love to our hubbies. It was a great post and I began thinking about ordinary ways to love my own hubbie. It didn't take long for my old flesh to chime in with something like "he won't even notice!" You mean, if I keep all the ironing done, or serve his favorite meal, or any one of many other things....he might not immediately stand and recognize me as the sweetest wife ever???! (Yes, my ole flesh is every bit that sarcastic!) I was quickly convicted that "it is not about me or my being recognized."

Just a few minutes later, I came across another post about behind the scene servants - simply serving others and being a blessing without recognition. Of course, God knows and He recognizes. I was beginning to sense a message.

Two minutes later, a devotion arrived in my inbox. I haven't even read it yet but its entitled "Is Not About You." Ok. I got it. Lesson learned.

Does this type of thing every happen to you? Or am I just that thick-headed it takes three (or more) promptings to get the point.:)

Summer is Hot - and Lazy:)

Friday with Friends note: This week - are you a "beach person" or a "mountain person"?? I know you can love them both but which one really grabs your heart? Tell us about it. I'm looking forward to it!

My Simple Woman's Daybook for Monday, July 29, 2010

Outside my is sunny and the beginning of another hot, summer day. Hubbie often told me as I was whining my way through winter that I would soon complain about summer - never! - so I'm doing my best to love these consecutive days of hazy, hot and humid! And no complaining:)

I am thinking....about our latest project - an organizational one! My favorite kind...and I am looking forward to putting all of our storage boxes (and STUFF) in some type of order in the basement. The shelves are in mid-construction. Hopefully, they will be finished tonight!

I am thankful for....Christian friends. I love the times we get together - to talk, and eat, and chat, and eat, and share, and eat........:)

I am clothes. No, I have not worked out - but its a step in the right direction.

I am remembering....driving through the California desert...ugh. It was definitely the longest part of our trip. Summer in Virginia isn't so bad after all!

I am going....househunting with a friend! Not for me - hopefully, for her! I love househunting.

I am reading....magazines. I guess it can be considered "lazy" reading - but that's what summer is for, right?

I am hear from Jordan soon - and that he is doing well during his pre-deployment training. Can you believe they would cut him off from his mama?? But, no calls or texts. Sure hope everything is still all set for him to be coming home soon (maybe next week!!) :)

On my mind....planning four different ladies' events. I enjoy all of them but dates and details are starting to all run together in my head. This ole brain definitely cannot sort and store like it used to??

From the kitchen....actually have three or four new recipes lined up to try this week. Let's hope they are winners - dinners have been pretty boring around here lately.

Around the house...dust. AGAIN.

Plans for the week....lazy day, summer plans. I love the carefree schedule of summer!

One of my favorite things.....Sunday morning Starbucks' runs on the way to church. Is it just a little sad that the "barista" starts Hubbie's "usual" when we walk in the door and can have it just about done before we finish ordering and paying? Someone goes there way too much!! :)

On Travel and Fashion

It is time for Friday with Friends and I don't know that I've given anyone enough time to join and I think I've about overshared about my cross country trip; however, if you would like to share about your memorable journey, I would LOVE to hear about it. Just let me know and I will link you in....

I was thinking about long trips and the fact that I enjoyed this one so much really is a treasure as I usually am not that patient with riding for long periods of time. I tend to grumble quite quickly. If I'm not moaning, I fall asleep.... alot - but I was a real trooper on this trip (and, just for the record, didn't sleep a wink while in the truck). The last time I remember travelling in the car and it actually being fun was way back in college (way back for me!) My best friend - and still one of the best! - lived in upstate New York. I was a mere three hours from home and still in the same state. I'd never been farther north than near-by Maryland and my idea of New York was NYC.

The first trip we made to her little home town was amazing for me. This was NOT NYC...but a beautiful, old town nestled in the mountains and her house was on a huge lake! Everything was so different from all I'd known in my home town and I loved it. The road trips to her house were long - and even often snowy - but any roadtrip with Deb was the best of times!! Definitely some of my best memories!! In fact, I think I need to plan another road trip with that girlyfriend!

Seeing other parts of the country is just so exciting!! If you have time, share with us today:) But before I go, I have to let you in on something. I am highly fashionable!! No kidding. And I had no idea.
I was looking through a sale booklet from Bed Bath and Beyond that came in the mail yesterday and they have for sale - get this - some type of something you put in your pants to make your backside look big!! Go figure! I just couldn't believe people were paying money for that.
Well, little did I know but my daughter was quick to inform me (I'm tellin' you this kids are full of usefull information) that a recent music "star" - I have no idea who - recently had plastic surgery to increase her rear view!! Are you kidding me??
And here I am...dieting and exercising and working my b*tt off (ha ha...just had to put that) to lose the inches - when all along big bums are fashionable?!? Well, if that is the case - I am HUGELY fashionable! Just so you know:) Have a great weekend - and share your adventure story if you can.

Random Thankful Thoughts

THANKFUL THURSDAY - and before I begin...with my very random thankful thoughts for today....just wondering if anyone has any clue why a random living room scene pops up when first clicking into my blog?? Please tell me I'm not the only one that sees that??! When I returned home from my trip, my background had been deleted (thankyou PhotoBucket) and with all the changes (improvements???) that Blogger has been making, I had quite the time getting a new background loaded. I don't really want to mess with it again but the mystery living room is bugging me!! I would love any hints or ideas......

My thankful thoughts are very random today. Of course, I have been thinking much about my trip. I am so thankful for that opportunity. Thankful for a brother who is also a friend. Thankful for a brother who does not snore! Some other thoughts from the trip:

** so thankful to finally have had our country's economic crisis explained to me - in VERY basic layman terms (code word for dummy's language) - and to actually understand it...well, some of it. And, by the way, along the trip, we not only solved the country's economic troubles but several other big issues, including immigration and the health care crisis, quite nicely. Now if only anyone were actually interested in our opinions and solutions:) The whole oil disaster still has us stumped:(

**so thankful that we (my brother and I) can have good conversations - and really listen to each other's ideas - even though we are true polar opposites when it comes to political values/opinions....yes, our votes totally cancel each other out during each election. I don't know, he can still come around one of these days!:)

**how DO siblings from the same parents, same background, same house, etc....grow to be so "different" as adults?? Guess we really are all individuals:)

**did you know that when you drive a 24ft. truck and pull a car behind it that you are required to stop at all truck weigh stations? Yep, we were rolling with the big dogs! However, I'm not sure that there really are actual people in those little buildings at the pull-off. It is all computerized and an arrow points your way - you never know what your truck weighs nor do you EVER see a soul. Seemed a bit fishy to me.

**we also were with the big guys at the truck stops - well, sorta. We needed the big drive-through lanes; however, there are only a couple (maybe one) pumps for "the little guys". If you end up in the wrong lane - and don't have a hub-o-meter (???) - you feel sorta dumb.

**not all states, in my humble opinion, are using there TARP funds for fixing the highways to their best ability. Some state highways are just a plain disgrace - and make a truck cab into a virtual popcorn popper.....with the driver and co-pilot the throughly bounced, popped, beaten and bruised popcorn!

**so thankful for this country - it really is beautiful. When you don't stray from home too often, you tend to think that everywhere looks just about the same as your neck of the woods - but, it ain't so! Every state was so unique and the landscapes and scenes were always changing and so beautiful. Well, the whole Death Valley thing...not so much (at least not for me!) but the rest of it - WONDERFUL!

I know it is late notice for Friday with Friends - but if you would like to share about your favorite car trip or cross country journey, please do. I'd love to know what you thought. I was surprised to learn in my comments how many actually ENJOY riding in a car (or truck)..... Hope to hear from several of you. (By the way, still working on those pictures!)

Tuesday, July 13, 2010

Well, you guessed it! I spent last week helping my brother move all of his worldly belongings from one side of the country to the opposite side! He had plans for movers and car shippers and all the works...which all began to fall apart at the eleventh hour. At the last minute, he became the packer, mover and shipper all in one. His wife had to fly ahead to California in order to begin her new job and, so, I went along for the drive:) Truly I did not drive much - the driving a "big rig" really is a guy thing, I suppose - but I totally was the entertainment along the way....and the official snack preparer!

We were driving this big ole truck and hauling the car as well! Real truckers, I'm tellin' you. It was quite intimidating at first but Scott was soon driving like a pro.

We spent a lot of time doing this...........

And a whole lot of time watching these...........................

And five days.....over 2500 miles later.....we made it here!!

I do have pictures from along the way that I hope to put together for my brother - and can hopefully share more later. Here are a few of the better ones from California. (Most of the others are taken from inside the truck looking through the window - ha! but they are good memories for the two of us.) It has been a long time since he and I spent much time just the two of us....and I was thrilled for the opportunity. My brother is not only smart (I've mentioned this before) but he is also funny. I loved our talks and even the quiet times while we watched the always changing landscapes across the country. It was a once in a lifetime trip - and probably one you would only want to do once:)

My brother moved to Carmel by the Sea. This picture is actually Monterey. The only thing "missing" from this picture is the COLD! Who knew when we arrived in California we would need sweaters! I packed for summer and, yes, I was freezing. (I finally had to buy a new sweater!) Apparently Monterey is like that this time of year....go figure.

My travelling buddy - and his houndy:) When you are out on the pier, you can hear the sea lions talking!!

Finally, the sun!!
Welcome to California, brother!!!

Counting the Days

THANKFUL THURSDAY....oh my heart is happy - and grateful! My airman (aka my sweet oldest son, Jordan) is coming home!! Ever since we learned of his deployment several months agao, we were told he would have leave to come home before heading out. And we have been waiting to know "WHEN???" ever since - and finally some word this week!

He will leave next week for several weeks of pre-deployment training (Nevada, I think??) and then when he gets back - he is coming home!! To say we are ecstatic would be an understatement! I haven't harrassed that boy in over a year - well, at least not in person! But, first I really want to hug his neck!! And then make him some "real food"!:)

Yes, that phone call just made my week (my month!)....and I'm also thankful today for:

*our gorgeous weather lately - a small respite from the super hot temperature
*opening the windows and a bit of fresh air in the it!
*time spent with a friend yesterday
*a sparkling clean refrigerator - not a chore I like but I love the end result
*thrift store bargains
*cute Fourth of July t-shirts
*Ladies' Day Out:)
*generous friends who shared so much for my daughter yesterday - such a blessing!
*my sweet Hubbie, and

*all of your sweet comments yesterday regarding "My Three Favorite Men" photo! All of you make me smile! Have a Very Thankful Thursday!!
